IT HAS been a three year build-up for the three partners in this year’s International Dairy Week Grand Champion Illawarra cow, Llandovery JR Joan 982.

The six year old cow was an honorable mention in the senior championship in 2016, was reserve senior champion in 2017 before this year’s success.

Owners Glen and Drew Gordon from Gorbro Holsteins and Craig Rapley, New Zealand, bought the female in a Red Revolution Sale in Kyabram.

“We bought her because we thought she had the goods,” Glen Gordon said.

He said the Illawarra ran with the 600 strong Holstein herd at Cohuna.

“We will take her home and flush her before lining her up for another go in 2020,” he said.

He said the cow was easy to work with and seemed to love going to shows.

Illawarra judge, Paul Morrison, England, said the champion was a “tremendous”, quality cow from a class of just two.

He said the cow had a great front end and was strong through the top line - a “powerful cow”

Reserve champion cow was Llandovery Ja-bob Stella shown by the Hayes family, Girgarre. Victoria.

Stella had tremendous body capacity and dairyness, Mr Morrison said.

The Intermediate champion was Llandovery Thorpes Stella 1413th shown by L. Alwer, Invergordon, Victoria.

The Junior champion was Panorama Angeline 48th shown by B. and J. Gavenlock, Tallygaroopna, Victoria.
