The second edition of the Farm Safety Starter Kit is now available.

Dairy Safely, Home Safely - Building a farm safety culture. That's the focus of the Australian dairy industry's farm safety initiative and a new set of resources to help drive sustainable safety improvements across the dairy industry.

Given the inherent dangers involved in working on farm, Dairy Australia's Bill Youl described both the Farm Safety Starter Kit and Farm Safety Manual as essential documents for all dairy farm businesses.

"The goal is to change the way we think about safety on our dairy farms in order to make improvements to the safety of farm owners, employees, families, contractors, service providers and visitors that come onto the farm" he said.

The second edition of the Farm Safety Starter Kit is now available, while the new Farm Safety Manual will be available from late 2017.

The Farm Safety Manual is made up of 14 modules and is designed to be a 'living' document, covering legal and practical safety requirements while allowing dairyfarmers to build safety records and reports into their business practices.

It's a step-by-step process whereby a series of strategies are implemented per module, with the aim of building a complete farm safety system and the ability to easily maintain and update it.

The manual has been field tested by a group of 'farm safety champion' dairyfarmers, who have incorporated the recommendations in the manual into their on-farm safety. Their feedback has ensured that the Farm Safety Manual provides practical, clear and appropriate advice for dairyfarmers throughout the industry.

The 10-year average shows that two dairyfarmers are killed on farm every year, last year was particularly concerning, with six deaths recorded across the country.

Behavioural change is key to arresting this disturbing statistic and Mr Youl said he believed the new resources provided the impetus for enacting improved on-farm safety practices.

"Any death or serious injury on our farms is just unacceptable and has tragic consequences for farming families and the local communities," he said. "Building a safety culture specifically for your farm offers the best chance to reverse this alarming trend."

Developed with the support of farmers, major industry bodies, processors and safety regulators from across Australia; the Farm Safety Manual will be available from late September, with training days to be rolled out through Regional Development Programs during 2018. D
