DAIRY Australia's Farm Business Fundamentals course has set up south-west Victorian dairy farmer Craig Howard to better manage his business.
Based in Heywood Mr Howard milks 285 cows on a 220-hectare milking platform.
He joined other farmers to do the three-day Farm Business Fundamentals training delivered through WestVic Dairy.
The training introduced him to Dairy Australia's Standard Chart of Accounts, covered how to get the information in his business organised and heard directly from rural accountants about the accounting process for a dairy farm business.
"For me, I had touched on a lot of these areas before but I wanted a bit more experience and knowledge around cashflow budgets," he said.
"We are also in a better place in getting ready to use DairyBase, which we have signed up to, and heard about the Dairy Farm Business Analysis training that covers this coming up in 2018.
"We aim to be using DairyBase next financial year so we can compare our performance with others in our region.
"We were also introduced to Dairy Australia's Standard Chart of Accounts and I've asked my accountant to move to that as it is more detailed than the package we are using at the moment.
"It's important as the Standard Chart of Accounts lines up with DairyBase."
Mr Howard said the course was professionally presented and allowed for valuable dialogue within the group.
"I will be looking forward to the next level of training which is Dairy Farm Business Analysis so we can get the most out of using DairyBase for our business going forward," he said.
